Eckelberry is better choice
After reading the article in The A-T March 5 about how Jeff Briggs is doing in his new job as sheriff, I felt compelled to write and offer my opinion. At the risk of offending my fellow Republicans on the Central Committee, I would like to state it was an error to appoint Jeff Briggs as sheriff instead of Bill Eckelberry. As is going on in Washington, politics trumped what is best for the county and its citizens. I was stunned, at the Republican Central Committee meeting to appoint the new sheriff, when it was announced Briggs was selected. Nothing against Briggs, but the difference in qualifications and experience between the two candidates is almost laughable. Eckelberry has worked for the sheriff’s department for 29 years, working his way up to chief deputy. Briggs has been a town cop for 15 years. Eckelberry knows the sheriff’s department inside and out, and was doing the job that now is being done by two new employee.
