SE board eyes finances

October 29, 2009

ATTICA — The Seneca East Board of Education examined the latest five-year forecast Monday night, with a wary eye for financial constraints and ever-changing programs. “It’s always a work in progress,” said Treasurer Laura Brickner, noting recent government stimulus efforts would have effectively rewritten portions of any earlier plan. She said stimulus funding is set to run for a couple years, and the new programs came at the expense of state payment reductions, with no guarantee of state cuts being restored afterward. The district also is aware of the phase-out in tangible personal property taxation, and is to have to adjust to not having those funds. Board President Herb Wise said the lion’s share of expenses are for personnel, including pay, benefits, and other requirements. He said this amounts to roughly 82 percent of money spent, rising to about 89 percent when costs of contracting for county-level services are included. “There’s not a lot of wiggle room,” said Wise.
