Budget panel must get to work

No one really knows with certainty how wide the hole in Ohio’s 2012-13 state budget will be. It is known it will be measured in billions of dollars — perhaps as much as $8 billion. Because the magnitude of the budget task facing Gov. Ted Strickland and legislators has been obvious for some time, a special commission was formed seven months ago to recommend strategies to deal with the problem. By this week, members of the commission had not yet met. Six members, Republicans and Democrats, have been appointed to the legislative panel. During the past few months, reporters have approached them from time to time, asking when the commission will begin its work and whether any ideas are being considered. A few days ago, Ohio House of Representatives Speaker Armond Budish, D-Beachwood, told a reporter one reason the panel has not met is that lawmakers have been busy keeping the current two-year budget in balance.
