Romanian-born Ioana Galu is to perform a faculty recital, “An Evening of Romantic Music,” at 7 p.m. Friday in Brenneman Music Hall on the campus of Heidelberg University. A violin instructor at Heidelberg, Galu is to be accompanied during the recital by guest violinists Iuliana Cotirlea, one of Galu’s former students, and Penny Thompson Kruse, a former teacher. Robert Satterlee on piano completes the ensemble. Selections for the recital include “Five Pieces” for two violins and piano by Dmitri Shostakovich; “Capriccio” for three violins by Frantz Hermann; “Two Violin Duets” by Aleksey Igudesman; “Serenata” for three violins and piano by Michael McClean; and “Suite in G Minor” for two violins and piano by Maurice Moszkowski. Galu earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in violin performance from Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in her native Cluj, Romania, later joining the faculty there. She earned a second master’s degree in violin performance from Bowling Green State University and continued her studies at the Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music. She plans to complete a doctorate of musical arts in contemporary music in May. She has received prizes in numerous national and international competitions and has performed in master classes and recitals worldwide. In addition to her teaching duties at Heidelberg, Galu provides summer instruction at the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, N.C., and is a member of the Eastern Festival Orchestra. The recital is free.
